I rode the Duluth training ride last ngiht. Felt fine for the majority of it. I got dropped towards the end and went back with 4 other guys. We caught back up with the group but it wasnt until the very end that we caught them. I am guessing I am only at about 75% of what I was at a few weeks ago. It is amazing what illness can do to your performance.
Ok, the last few weeks have been rocky for me since I have been sick. I rode on Friday, 6/17 to determine if I could race on Saturday at the Frazier Suwanee Classic Crit. I felt alright on the bike so I decided to just go ahead and race. The race was nice and my only goal was to finish on the lead lap. I was afraid that I was going to get dropped during the first few laps. The course was nice and basically was a steady climb on one side and then a descent on the other side. So you could rest on the descent. I finished the race in the back of the front group. The last two laps were a blur to me and I honestly thought I was dreaming. I guess the medication didn’t agree with the strain I was putting on my body. I had to sit in my car for 15 minutes after the race was over to recover and make sure I was really awake and alive.
Monday I went on the Duluth recovery ride and I felt good on the bike. The real test will be tonight on the Duluth training ride.
I have been off the bike since last week. I have some sort of sinus infection and I am miserable. Missed out on the race this apst weekend. I am going to try and get on the bike tomorrow and pedal around house at a very slow pace. I already entered the Suwanee Crit this coming up weekend but will have to play ir by ear if I can actually race in it. I figure I will most likely start the race and just be there as a support rider for the rest of the team.
Today was a horrible day on the bike. I went up to Braselton and went for a ride with my good friend Scott Hodge. I have said it once and will say it again. Scott is one of the most talented bike riders I have ever riden with. We started the ride out from his shop. About 3 miles into the ride, it starts to rain, then it pours for the next 15 miles. Once the rain stops, it turned into the nice hot sauna. It was awful. I felt awful and it showed on the bike. I am now coming down with a head cold and feel really icky. Just in time for the Dahlonega race….YIPPPIE. Well, my only goal this weekend is to get our “STARS” to the base of Wolfpen in one piece and hopefully up front. After that I am going to take it easy and ride a slow pace back to the car. I have nothing to prove or gain. I am only going in support for my team and the riders that can actually podium. I am not one fo them since I amnot a climber. I will probably ride a slow 10 miles tomorrow and then off to bed early.
What a miserable week again. I have been dressed ready to go for the last two nights but heavy thunderstorms seem to pop up right at about 6 PM. Tomorrow I am leaving work at 2:00 PM to go with Zoe to her pre-op appointment. Hopefully the weather will co-operate for a few hours afterwards so I can get in some miles. Thursday I will be going up to Addictive to see Scott and maybe get a ride in with him. I miss Scott:(
Well, today we went and did the 3 gap race course. I was sore from yesterday’s Tucker ride. Woody’s is flatter than I thought and Suches is a lot harder this direction. I was actually fine until about the last 1/2 mile up Wolfpen. I could feel my quads starting to cramp. I backed off and let the others go without me. Descended Wolfpen at blazing speeds and then started up neels. I had to let them go from the start since my legs were not feeling good anymore. Finished a few minutes behind them. On the way back from the base of neels, my quads were on the edge of locking out on me. I had to do a miserable 6 mph back to the car. The rest of them started coming back to look for me. I was alright just didnt have anything left in my legs. I should be fine next weekend for the race.
Saturday morning Tucker ride. 45 miles of pure pain:) I finally was able to finish the ride in the front group. I think I was very capable of doing it last time, but had to stop and wait for my friends that didnt know their way back. It was a fun and fast ride. I wasn’t feeling it when we first started the ride but just hung on to finish in the front 5-10 of the group. Pace was 23+ mph.
35 mile loop around the house. Nothing too exciting just getting the miles in.
What a crappy week it has been. I haven’t been on the bike since Tn. thanks to all this rain we are getting. I went out today event hough the conditions were not very good. It wasnt raining when I left, but there was a 70% chance and it was dark and windy. I got in about 25 miles and then it started to rain. I was close to home so I decided to just cut it short and head home. Will try and get some more miles in tomorrow and then have a punishing weekend. Sat. I will be doing the 45 mile Tucker ride and Sunday I will be going up with the team to do 3 Gap + TT.
Was up in Tn. this weekend and rode with the Columbia Cycling Club. What a great group of guys. They made me feel right at home on their ride. The ride was beautiful yet challenging. There was a lot of STEEP climbing but nothing very long. It was good training for the upcoming 3-gap race next weekend. We went about 65 miles and it was nice to enjoy what the area had to offer. There were many of times where we would go for miles before we would see a car. The only thing we had to worry about were the dogs. Hopefully I can make it back up there and ride with them again.
